Verify Your ESTA Status
You can verify your ESTA status or update it. You can check your travel authorization to the US for many reasons. This page outlines several reasons to verify and check your ESTA status. Before you travel to the United States, it is essential to check the expiration date and retrieve your authorization number. You will need to reapply if your ESTA (or passport) has expired before you can enter the USA. Verify the status of your ESTA travel authorization if:

If your travel authorization has expired and you wish to visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you must reapply to ESTA. Your travel authorization cannot be extended. Two-year validity is required for travel authorizations to visit the USA. Your new approval will automatically replace your previous appointment if you apply for a new ESTA.

How can I check my ESTA status?
Swiss citizens and citizens of other countries that have waived visa requirements should be able to verify their ESTA status immediately. If it isn’t, you will be able to verify the status of your application within 72 hours.
There are three main statuses available for an ESTA application:
- Authorization Approved
- Authorization Pending
- Authorization Denied
- Approval of authorization

What is the significance of the Application number?
After paying the fee, you will receive an application number. This number is vital as it will be used to verify the status and validity of your application. The following information is helpful to retrieve your application number in case you lose it:

Why was my ESTA refused?

- Pay attention to the number on your identification card. Your National ID number is what you see on your passport. Your ESTA travel authorization is valid for two years even if you don’t travel to the United States during your application dates. During the 2-year validity, your ESTA can be used for multiple trips.
Can I renew my ESTA?
It is not possible to renew an ESTA. If your travel authorization has expired or changes have been made to your passport, you must submit a new application. Travel authorizations to the U.S. are generally valid for two years.

My travel authorization is valid for travel to the United States but will expire before I depart the U.S. for home. Do I need to apply for a new one before my trip?
You can still use your current US travel authorization for your complete trip. Visa Waiver program regulations require that the travel authorization be valid for your date of arrival in the United States. Still, you can depart the United States on schedule even if your ESTA authorization has expired.
